As can be seen in the info graphic below targeting the long tail keywords has become less effective after Google implemented Google Instant, Spelling Corrections, Search Mutations and Google Vertical Search Products.
According to the case study of Seobook the number of long tail keyword searches has dropped from 20% or 25% to 16% in just a few years. I think the image below will give you a good overview of how recent changes by Google have affected the search engine result pages.
Personally I am still receiving lots traffic from long tail keyword searches but I must say that this used to be a lot more. I want to mention that you can always target long tail keyword with LSI which stands for Latent Semantic Indexing.
Basically it means that when writing an article you should also mention synonymes and long tail keywords to enable your article to also rank for these keywords because Google will index these words and make relevant connections. LSI helps Google understand what your article (or site) is all about and this will result in more visitors from Google for related and long tail keywords.

Especially affiliate sites have to take action and stop copy / pasting product descriptions and add their own unique product descriptions in order to be able to stop the punishements by Google for their lack of uniqueness.
